Victory MMA

Victory MMA is a mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym in San Diego, California. It opened in 2007, founded by Dean Lister. The founder

Victory MMA's founder, Dean Lister, is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and submission grappler who won the ADCC open-weight, or absolute, title in 2003. That result, taken across every weight in a single bracket, is the credential that defined his standing in the grappling world before he opened a gym of his own.

The San Diego room he opened in 2007 is co-owned with a retired United States Navy SEAL who also holds a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. The pairing gave the gym two black-belt owners from the start, and set its identity as a grappling-first mixed martial arts academy in the city.

A black belt is portable. What travels with it is a standard, and this one crossed a border.

The Tijuana lineage

The reason Victory MMA registers on a Tijuana desk runs through one of its black belts. Raúl Arvizu earned his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Dean Lister, the lineage that links San Diego grappling directly to Tijuana's Entram Gym.

In 2006, one year before Victory MMA opened, Arvizu founded Entram Gym in Tijuana, Baja California. The two rooms sit on opposite sides of the checkpoint, but a single belt ties them together: the standard a San Diego coach set on the mat is the standard a Tijuana coach carried home and built a gym around. For a scene that is usually described as a one-way export lane, Tijuana talent leaving for larger stages, the Victory MMA connection points the other way. It is a case of a discipline, and a specific grappling pedigree, moving south into the city rather than out of it. That direction of travel is the part of the border story that gets told least often.
