The Tijuana fight scene is usually told from the south side of the border, but its training map does not end at the crossing. The San Diego gyms of the corridor belong to the same working geography: rooms that trade coaches, sparring partners, and a jiu-jitsu lineage with the academies down in Baja California. This page is an overview of that San Diego side, and a door to the four gyms AXIS covers there.
The grappling line south
Much of the corridor's ground game traces to one San Diego figure. Dean Lister is an American submission-grappling pioneer and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who won the ADCC absolute, or open weight, title in 2003. In 2007 he founded Victory MMA in San Diego, co-owned with the retired Navy SEAL and jiu-jitsu black belt Jocko Willink. The line runs directly across the border, because Raúl Arvizu, who founded Entram Gym in Tijuana, earned his own jiu-jitsu black belt under Lister, a lineage that connects San Diego grappling to the Tijuana room.
The border here works less like a wall than like a hallway. The mats on one side were built, in part, by the coaches on the other.
The four rooms
City Boxing has operated in downtown San Diego since 2001, offering boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu under one roof. It sits closest to the crossing of the four, an easy stop for fighters moving north for rounds.
The Arena ranks among the largest combat-sports gyms in the United States, with programs in boxing, jiu-jitsu, judo, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, and wrestling running side by side. Its size gives a visiting fighter access to disciplines and training partners a smaller room cannot hold.
Alliance MMA Gym was founded in San Diego in 2007 and opened by Brandon Vera; it runs a professional mixed martial arts program with facilities in San Diego, Chula Vista, and El Cajon. The Chula Vista and El Cajon locations put a full professional camp within a short drive of the border, part of why the two-way lane between the cities keeps running.
And Victory MMA, the academy Dean Lister opened in 2007, anchors the grappling end of the map, the San Diego node of the lineage that reaches south into Entram.

Read together, the four rooms describe the northern half of a single corridor. Boxing and Muay Thai downtown, a broad combat-sports floor and a professional MMA camp spread across the county, and a grappling academy whose lineage reaches straight into Tijuana. The fights happen on both sides of the line; so does the training.
